What is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic Therapy is a holistic, body-centred approach to counselling that recognises the deep connection between the mind, body, and nervous system. It is based on the understanding that our experiences, emotions, and life events are not only processed cognitively but are also stored and expressed through the body.

When we experience stress, trauma, anxiety, grief, or overwhelming life circumstances, the body can hold onto these experiences in the form of tension, physical discomfort, emotional reactivity, or a sense of feeling disconnected from ourselves. Somatic Therapy helps bring awareness to these patterns, creating opportunities for healing and regulation.

Through gentle exploration of bodily sensations, movement, breath, posture, and emotional experiences, Somatic Therapy supports clients in developing a greater understanding of their nervous system and how it responds to stress and challenge. Rather than focusing solely on talking about problems, this approach helps individuals tune into their body’s wisdom and natural capacity for healing.

Somatic Therapy can help with:
• Anxiety and stress
• Trauma and PTSD
• Grief and loss
• Burnout and overwhelm
• Emotional regulation difficulties
• Low self-esteem and self-confidence
• Depression and low mood
• Relationship challenges
• Personal growth and self-awareness

Sessions are tailored to each individual’s needs and may include mindfulness, grounding techniques, breath awareness, nervous system education, movement, and reflective therapeutic dialogue. The process is collaborative, gentle, and paced according to what feels safe and manageable for you.

By fostering a deeper connection with your body, Somatic Therapy can help you feel more grounded, resilient, and empowered to navigate life’s challenges with greater ease and self-compassion.
